Dit is deel 3 van het drieluik "Vraag het Marion". Ik zal in dit deel
uit de doeken doen hoe de hoofdrolspelers in dit drama geprobeerd hebben
de hypothese, dat het SARS-CoV-2 virus uit het Wuhan Institute of
Virology (WIV) ontsnapt zou kunnen zijn, te ontkrachten. Wellicht is
ontkrachten niet het juiste woord. Zij hebben werkelijk alles geprobeerd
om deze hypothese in diskrediet te brengen en tot complottheorie te
verklaren.

In deel 2 van "Vraag het Marion", beschreef ik al hoe Alina Chan Peter
Daszak zodanig van repliek diende dat Daszak er verder het zwijgen toe
deed, aangezien hij door zijn argumenten heen was geraakt. Het was de
discussie over het artikel van Chan, met als conclusie dat het
SARS-CoV-2 virus al aan het begin van de pandemie opmerkelijk goed
aangepast is aan zijn nieuwe gastheer, de mens. Het was de eerste barst
in de zoönose-theorie als hypothese voor het ontstaan van de pandemie.
Ook heb ik in deel 2 besproken dat Daszak de financiering van zijn
onderzoek, gedaan in samenwerking met onderzoekers van het WIV,
kwijtraakte. Dit nadat bekend werd dat hij via Eco-Alliance geld,
afkomstig van het National Health Institute (NIH), doorsluisde naar het WIV.

In de complexe politieke en wetenschappelijke discussie die volgde over
de origine van het SARS-CoV-2 virus, is het steeds opnieuw deze Peter
Daszak die als centrale figuur opduikt bij de pogingen om de/lab-leak/
theorie naar het rijk der fabelen te verwijzen. Overigens zou het niet
de eerste keer zijn dat een SARS-virus uit het laboratorium is ontsnapt.
Na de epidemie van SARS in 2002/2003 zijn er diverse, steeds door
ongelukken en veronachtzaming veroorzaakte, ontsnappingen van het SARS
geweest, als ook van andere gevaarlijke ziekteverwekkers, ook uit
laboratoria met het hoogste veiligheidsniveau.

In deel drie begin ik bij een ingezonden brief in /The Lancet/ van 7
maart 2020, onder andere ondertekend door deze Daszak. De veelzeggende
titel van deze brief luidt als volgt: /"Statement in support of the
scientists, public health professionals, and medical professionals of
China combatting COVID-19". /

In deze ingezonden brief spreken de verschillende auteurs hun sympathie
*(*voor*) *en steun uit voor hun Chinese collega's (1). Zo vermeldt de
brief de volgende passage: /"We have watched as the scientists, public
health professionals and medical professionals of China in particular,
have worked diligently and effectively to rapidly identify the pathogen
behind this outbreak, put in place significant measures to reduce its
impact, and share their results transparently with the global health
community. This effort has been remarkable." /

Deze loftuiting was echter nog niet genoeg: behalve het uitspreken van
de steun voor de Chinese collega's en het uitbundig loven van China voor
de snelle en effectieve aanpak van de uitbraak van de corona-pandemie*,*
was er nog een tweede doel. Dat doel was om een ieder - onafhankelijk
van positie, wetenschappelijk aanzien of verdiensten voor de wetenschap
- die zelfs maar de mogelijkheid zou overwegen dat het SARS-CoV-2 virus
uit het laboratorium van Wuhan ontsnapt zou kunnen zijn, voor eens en
altijd duidelijk te maken dat dit een absurde complottheorie was, en dat
hen de mond gesnoerd moest worden: /"The rapid, open, and transparent
sharing of data on this outbreak is now being threatened by rumours and
misinformation around its origins. We stand together to strongly condemn
conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural
origin. Scientists from multiple countries have published and analysed
genomes of the causative agent, severe acute respiratory syndrome
coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and they overwhelmingly conclude that this
coronavirus originated in wildlife as have so many other emerging
pathogens..." /

/"...Conspiracy theories do nothing but create fear, rumours, and
prejudice that jeopardise our global collaboration in the fight against
this virus. We support the call from the Director-General of WHO to
promote scientific evidence and unity over misinformation and
conjecture. We want you, the science and health professionals of China,
to know that we stand with you in your fight against this virus. We
invite others to join us in supporting the scientists, public health
professionals, and medical professionals of Wuhan and across China.
Stand with our colleagues on the frontline." /

Naar later bleek was deze ingezonden brief in /The Lancet /het
initiatief van Peter Daszak, die enkele van zijn collega wetenschappers
van Eco-Alliance en andere belanghebbenden wist te mobiliseren om deze
brief mede te ondertekenen. De auteurs van de ingezonden brief lieten
verder weten dat zij geen 'conflicts of interest' hadden. Dat bleek een
aperte leugen. Rita Colwell, die later nog een keer ter sprake zal
komen, en James Hughes zijn lid van de Raad van Bestuur van EcoHealth
Alliance (11,12). William Karess is Executive Vice President for Health
and _Policy _van de EcoHealth Alliance en Hume Field is Science and
Policy Advisor van deze stichting. (10,13,14).

Dat is nog niet alles: /The Lancet/ riep op 22 juni 2020 een speciale
COVID-19 commissie in het leven. Deze commissie werd weer onderverdeeld
in verschillende Taskforces, waaronder één met de naam /Origins, Early
Spread of the Pandemic, _and One_ Health Solutions to Future Pandemic
Threats (43). /Niet alleen Peter Daszak nam plaats in deze Taskforce,
maar daarnaast nog vijf anderen die de ingezonden brief in /The Lancet/
ondertekenden, te weten Hume Field, Gerald T. Keutsch, Sait Ki Lam,
Stanly Perlman en Linda Saif. Men mag aannemen dat dit de publicatie in
/The Lancet/ enkele maanden ervoor bepaald niet bemoeilijkt heeft, en
ook dat de objectiviteit van deze Taskforce wat betreft de origine van
het SARS-CoV-2 virus in een bedenkelijk perspectief zet.

Een en ander leidde alsnog tot een addendum bij de ingezonden brief,
waarin Daszak alleen zijn eigen//conflicterende belangen opsomt, maar
niet die van de andere auteurs die de brief ondertekenden (2). Overigens
heeft hij zich naar aanleiding van de commotie*,* die rondom zijn
persoon ontstond na het bekend worden van zijn initiërende rol bij de
ingezonden brief*, *teruggetrokken uit deze COVID-19 commissie van /The
Lancet/ (16). Dat China zich allesbehalve coöperatief, open en
transparant heeft opgesteld, zoals in deze verklaring wordt gesteld,
behoeft eigenlijk geen verder toelichting (41,42)
