Text messages, town halls plug Canadian youth into federal vote

TORONTO - Haweya Ali may be an anomaly among people her age - she can't
wait to vote.

At 17, she's a year shy of casting a ballot, but that hardly diminishing
her interest in the upcoming federal election. She has avidly followed the
leaders' debates and exchanged views with her family and friends. Leaving
war-torn Somalia for Canada with her family as an infant has given Haweya
a deep appreciation for democracy.

'Voting is something I hold to my heart,' she said. 'I think people our
age should vote. It's a privilege,' she said. 'I want my child to have the
best Canada possible, the best life possible. (Voting) will make adifference
for everyone else.'
