Samenvatting-Eng:
Abstract Observation Facility of the Oceans in a High-CO2 World The
combustion of fossil fuels leads to emissions of carbondioxide CO2,
causing an increase of CO2 in the atmosphere as well as the invasionof
CO2 into the world oceans. Atmospheric CO2 is expected to be doublingat
~700 10-6 atm at about 2050 A.D. This is only 46 years ahead and
ourchildren and grandchildren living today will witness this double CO2
world. This transient increase of anthropogenic CO2 in atmosphere and
oceansmay well cause other changes of the globe. Climate change has been
predicted, with global warming which may already be taking place.
Moreover by CO2invasion into the sea, there is a transition taking place
of the OceanicCarbon Cycle with foreseen and unforeseen consequences for
marine ecosystems. National investment of The Netherlands in an
observation facility of the oceans in a high-CO2 world is requested for
accuratemeasurements in context of four research topics. Firstly a very
successfulongoing CO2 uptake study in the North Sea is being extended
into a uniquefirst-ever integrated assessment of exchanges of CO2
between sea, land andatmosphere in northwest Europe. Moreover the
Atlantic Ocean is the key ocean for uptake of CO2 from the atmosphere,
where we will assess andcontinue our observations of CO2 at the two most
important high latitudesites for invasion of CO2 into the world oceans.
One site is theAtlantic-Antarctic zero meridian N-S section (0oW,
45-70oS) where the CO2 isentrained with the formation of Antarctic
Intermediate Water sinking to about 1000 m
