Punk godfather joins mayoral race

The man who brought the world the Sex Pistols punk band has set his
sights on becoming mayor of London. Punk godfather Malcolm McLaren plans
to join race as an independent candidate with a radical manifesto,
including legalised brothels and the sale of alcohol in libraries.

Mr McLaren's candidature will be funded and managed by Alan McGee, the
record company boss behind the rise of Oasis. His full manifesto is
being unveiled in the New Statesman magazine this week.

He wants museum charges to be scrapped, each London borough to have its
own football team and the use of rickshaws and horses to cut down on
traffic congestion. In addition, among his proposals will be electric
tram routes, 24-hour opening for pubs and restaurants, a lottery to help
the homeless and Amsterdam-style cafes licensed to sell cannabis.

He writes: ''I have never seen so many restaurants, coffee shops, so
many places to go to buy things, yet London has never seemed so
dull...The cappuccino bar culture that Tony Blair raves about looks set
to dominate the whole of central London's lifestyle.''

The entry of Mr McLaren into the mayoral race would provide the contest
with one of its first independent candidates beyond the major political
parties.
