Beste Herman,

Toevallig ben ik ook nijver bestudeerder van Kuhn. De preciese
literatuurplaatsen van 'ander volk, andere theorie' staan mij
niet direct voor de geest (zijn hele revolutie-boek gaat er
niettemin over). Maar dat er bij 'nieuw volk' geen onderling
begrip tussen oud en nieuw bestaat, heeft Kuhn later
teruggenomen. Zie hieronder de passage.

Extrapolatie: nu ons uitzendbureau Opschudding niks wezenlijks
van zich laat horen, blijf ik bij mijn stelling dat het 'nieuw
volk' is zonder enige (verstaanbare) nieuwe ideeen. Dus welke
oude ideeen sterven er eigenlijk uit, Herman?

K. oefent zelfkritiek en oppert nu een 'inverted opinion' in zijn
stelling: een scientific revolution verandert niet per definitie
de meaning of scientific terms: ... 'and I suggested that the
result was an incommensurabolity of viewpoints and a partial
breakdown of communication between the proponents of different
theories. I have since recognized that "meaning change" names a
problem rather than an isoable phenomenon, and I am now
persuaded, largely by the work of Quine, that the problems of
incommensurability and partial communication should be treated
in another way' (xxii).
Dus: aanhangers van verschillende theorieen of paradigma's
spreken ander jargon, met als gevolg dat onderlinge begrip is
'inevitably limited by the imperfections of the processes of
translation and of reference determination' (xxiii).
