Psychiatric science and neuroscience are not equipped to accept shocking
insights. One reads the wacky and interesting conceptual papers
published by physicists and mathematician and contrasts them with the
cookie cutter fMRI papers in their various flavours and thinks… there’s
no way this field could accept the existence of black holes the way 20th
c. physicists were ready for such an insight. Almost everything that
isn’t a neuroimaging paper or a bio marker paper is viewed with
suspicion/incredulity…
This is why psychoanalytic terms are viewed with suspicion while
baseless treatments that are not supported by any substantial “evidence”
(such as TMS) are readily accepted simply because they satisfy a
scientistic aesthetic…[...]
