/Popular culture has defined *anarchy* as “the absence of rules”; it’s 
actually the*absence of rule—of authority*. The prefix an- is Greek for 
“without,” while arkos means “chief” or “ruler.” (The New Oxford 
American Dictionary lists anarchy as a synonym for nihilism, a 
definition that probably only a socialist would give.) /
