    Should we give things, such as nature, a voice in the political
    debate? The renowned French philosopher and sociologist Bruno Latour
    first developed this innovative idea to politicize ecology in the
    early nineties. Nature has a democratic voice, he claims. Come and
    hear how this thought should lead to a different way of dealing with
    everything that is not human.


        *The Parliament of Things*

    We live in a new climate regime according to Bruno Latour, one in
    which the influence of humans on nature determines everything and in
    which we make endless connections with the natural world. In this
    so-called Anthropocene, humans, animals, plants, and things are
    inseparable from each other. Because of this we need to give
    everything that is non-human a voice. This voice can be heard in a
    role-playing game in the Parliament of Things. Listening could help
    us to preserve nature for future generations.

    Latour’s idea of a Parliament of Things has resonated: the Whanganui
    river in New Zealand has been granted the same legal status as a
    human, and in The Netherlands, the Embassy of the North Sea has been
    founded to investigate whether we could give the things, plants,
    animals, and humans in and around the North Sea a political voice.
    What does it mean to let non-humans vote in politics? How much does
    this ask of our empathy and imagination? And is there room in our
    political reality for these kinds of role-playing games?

    After his lecture Bruno Latour will participate in a discussion with
    philosopher Arjen Kleinherenbrink.

    <http://www.bruno-latour.fr/>* is a renowned French philosopher and
    sociologist and laureate of the Spinozalens 2020. He teaches at
    Cornell University and is founder of the Sciences Po Medialab.
    Latour addresses social questions, such as issues about technology
    and climate and appears often in public debates.

    Latour is the author of many books about technology and climate,
    among which several have been translated into Dutch, including /Oog
    in oog met Gaia (2017) /and /We zijn nooit modern geweest (2016)/.
    The collection /Het Parlement van de Dingen/–/over ecologie en de
    representatie van niet-mensen /will appear this fall, with
    translations of the most important of Bruno Latour’s articles about
    the Parliament of Things and ecology.

    Moeten we dingen, zoals natuur, een stem geven in het politieke
    debat? De beroemde Franse filosoof en socioloog Bruno Latour kwam
    begin jaren ’90 al met het vernieuwende idee om ecologie te
    politiseren. De natuur heeft een democratische stem zo stelt hij.
    Kom luisteren hoe deze gedachte moet leiden tot een andere omgang
    met alles wat niet-mens is.


        *Parlement van de dingen*

    Volgens Bruno Latour leven we in een nieuw klimaatregime, waarin de
    invloed van de mens op de natuur allesbepalend is en we talloze
    verbindingen aangaan met de natuurlijke wereld. In dit zogenaamde
    antropoceen zijn mensen, dieren, planten en dingen onlosmakelijk met
    elkaar verbonden. Omdat onze invloed op de natuur daardoor ongekend
    groot is, moeten we volgens Bruno Latour alles wat niet-mens is een
    stem geven. Deze stem kan verwoord worden via een rollenspel in een
    ‘parlement van de dingen’. Dit helpt ons op weg om onze natuur te
    behouden voor toekomstige generaties.


        *Verbeeldingskracht*

    Latours idee van een parlement van de dingen heeft inmiddels
    weerklank gevonden. Zo kreeg in Nieuw-Zeeland de Whanganui-rivier
    dezelfde wettelijke status als de mens. In Nederland is de Ambassade
    van de Noordzee opgericht om te onderzoeken of we de dingen,
    planten, dieren en mensen in en rond de Noordzee een stem kunnen
    geven. Wat betekent het om niet-mensen een stem te geven in het
    politieke debat? Hoeveel vraagt dit van onze empathie en
    verbeeldingskracht? En is er in de politieke realiteit ruimte voor
    dit soort gedachte-experimenten?

    Na zijn lezing gaat Bruno Latour in gesprek met filosoof Arjen
    Kleinherenbrink.
