"It is necessary to deny life as an activity of sentience and
signification in order to affirm Being's autonomous truth as
“in-itselfness.” The Great Outdoors is a glacial wasteland, radical
exteriority is absolutely, outlandishly dead. One could say that, for
these thinkers, to speak of an “end of the world,” far from a pragmatic
contradiction (as Chakrabarty suggests is the case with Weisman), is, on
the contrary, a sheer metaphysical tautology, a trivial ontological
pleonasm: the end is the world's mode of “existence.”
