Een Frans boek maakt furore in Duitsland: Retour à Reims van de
socioloog Didier Eribon. Het is een openhartige roman over zijn ooit
communistische familie: fabrieksarbeiders in Noordoost-Frankrijk, die nu
vrijwel allemaal op het Front National stemmen. Eribon (1953) is als
homoseksuele intellectueel hard uit het nest gevallen, maar keert na
jarenlange radiostilte terug als zijn moeder op een dag belt om te
zeggen dat zijn vader overleden is. Tegelijkertijd, en bovenal, is dit
een intrigerend boek over hoe linkse partijen er niet in slagen om zich
de problemen van grote groepen gemarginaliseerde, angstige burgers aan
te trekken – in Frankrijk en elders in de westerse wereld.
Eribon velt een hard oordeel over links, van de traditionele Franse
Parti Socialiste en de Britse Labour Party tot ‘vernieuwde’ linkse
partijen als Podemos in Spanje of zelfs Occupy Wallstreet, die de
‘andere 99 procent’ zegt te vertegenwoordigen. Hij verwijt ze allemaal
dat ze in hun strijd tegen de uitwassen van de globalisering en het
neoliberalisme – uitwassen die zijn familie hard treffen en moedeloos
maken – alsmaar nationalistischer worden. Het valt hem op dat linkse
partijen steeds vaker termen als patrie of Heimat gebruiken. Dat ze
steeds meer accent leggen op de strijd van ‘het volk’ tegen de elite,
oligarchen en immigranten. Maar de volgende vraag is dan: wie horen er
wel en niet tot dat volk? Zo kom je in een onsmakelijke Blut-und-Boden
discussie terecht die iedereen, arbeiders incluis, alleen maar verder
van huis brengt.
