The White House hit back Wednesday against complaints from Chief Justice
John G. Roberts Jr. about a pep-rally-like atmosphere in Congress in
January as President Obama delivered his State of the Union address, in
which he criticized a recent decision by the Supreme Court. The White
House press secretary, Robert Gibbs, said: “The president has long been
committed to reducing the undue influence of special interests and their
lobbyists over government. That is why he spoke out to condemn the
decision and is working with Congress on a legislative response to close
this loophole.” Chief Justice Roberts made his remarks Tuesday in
response to a question from an audience member at the University of
Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
