Henk,

Dit kan kloppen. Let wel, wat ze mij altijd hebben geleerd: als je moet
grijpen naar middelen als verkeersborden en stoplichten, dan heb je een fout
in het ontwerp van de weg gemaakt. Voorbeelden te over: Een 4-baansweg
binnen de bebouwde kom die enigszins op een autosnelweg lijkt. Toch maximum
snelheid 50 km/u, de weg nodigt echter uit om 70 te rijden.
Een ontsluitingsweg van een wijk waar je maximaal 50 mag en waar allerlei
obstakels in gezet zijn hetgeen automobilisten weer uitnodigt om zich als
kampioen slalom te gedragen.
Bij mij in de gemeente (Zaanstad) is het al jarenlang bekend dat er ergens
een ambtenaar een grote container verkeersborden heeft staan die zo nodig te
pas en te onpas overal in de gemeente neergezet moeten worden. Dit en de
vele stoplichten gaf Zaanstad heel lang de bijnaam "Traffic Light City".
Ik heb in de aanloop naar de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen al eens voorgesteld
om alle ambtenaren, gemeenteraadsleden en leden van college van B&W  te
verplichten om op de fiets naar het gemeentehuis te komen (in ieder geval 2x
per week) zodat ze enige realiteitszin inzake verkeerskundig ontwerpen
vanuit de praktijk bijgebracht gaat worden.
Lijkt misschien ludiek, maar blijkt in de praktijk vaak heel erg nodig te
zijn.

In Utrecht voeren ze al tijden een stoplichtloos experiment uit rond het
centrale Neudeplein. Tot ieders tevredenheid. En de mijne. Het aantal
gewonden en besmettingen schijnt sterk te zijn gedaald. Vooral de
laagdrempelige buschauffeurs rijden voorzichtiger...
