Het lijkt er op dat het GSM netwerk open licht voor ''eigenzinnig gebruik.'

Open-source mobile phone network in operation at HAR2009 event

On his blog, Harald Welte, programmer and Linux hacker reports on an
open-source GSM mobile phone network set up at HAR2009 (Hacking at
Random), a 4-day event staged in the Netherlands covering technology and
security. The blog shows photos and technical details of the equipment
setup, which was authorized by the Dutch telecom authority and fully
compliant with all relevant requirements.

The equipment comprised two base transceiver stations (BTS), each
supplying 100mW of transmit power. The BTSs provided access to the base
station controller (BSC) located in a tent and suitably implemented as a
Linux server running OpenBSC. The system was able to identify users by
means of texting a token (by SMS). A total of 391 users successfully
logged on and were able to use their mobile phone just as in any other
network. An increasing number of independent researchers are beginning to
experiment with mobile phone networks and equipment.

Welte’s approach proves that mobile phone infrastructure is now within the
active reach of hackers and that before long unexpected things may happen
on existing networks.
