PARIS May 29, 2005 — Initial TV projections suggested French voters rejected
the proposed European Union constitution on Sunday, dealing a severe blow to
the ambitious effort to further unite the 25-nation bloc.

Three polls, which did not include results from Paris and the southern city of
Lyon, gave the "non" vote between 54.5 and 55.6 percent a result that, if
confirmed in the actual count, would be a humiliating defeat for President
Jacques Chirac.
