Dutch economy is worst performer in European Union
 --------------------------------------------------

AMSTERDAM - The Netherlands has the worst performing economy of all 25
 countries in the European Union.

The European statistics agency Eurostat reported on Thursday that economic
prosperity in the Netherlands dropped by 0.5 percent in the first quarter
when compared with a year earlier.

Only Italy and Malta came close to this poor result with 0.2 percent and
 0.1 percent drops respectively.

The union as a whole registered economic growth of 1.4 percent when compared
with the year earlier. Compared to the preceding quarter, the EU's economy
 grew by 0.5 percent

This is yet again lower than the US and Japan which saw their economies grow
by 0.9 percent and 1.2 percent respectively.

The European economy in the first three months appears to have been mainly
influenced by a 0.2 percent higher consumer spending compared with the
previous quarter. At the same time investment fell by 0.2 percent and
 exports by 0.7 percent.

Further Purchasing Power Decline Last Year
 ------------------------------------------

THE HAGUE, 15/7/05 - Dutch households lost purchasing power again last year.
After allowing for inflation, real disposable incomes fell by 1.4 percent.
This followed a drop of 2.7 percent in 2003, according to figures from the
Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS) released yesterday.

Salaries went up 1.4 percent last year and income from social security and
pensions by nearly 3 percent. But nothing was left of this increase in
income because households had to pay much more in taxes and premiums.
Pension premiums showed a particularly sharp jump of 9 percent. Household
consumption spending was unchanged in volume terms but rose 1 percent due to
 price increases.

Household debt swelled by over 44 billion euros to 536 billion. Of this
increase, 90 percent was accounted for by housing mortgages. Outstanding
mortgages totalled 451 billion euros at end-2004. As a percentage of
disposable income, household debt climbed to 234 percent in 2004 from 177
 percent in 2001.

Savings also increased in 2004, by 14.5 billion euros to 198 billion.
Households on balance sold shares worth 5.1 and bonds worth 0.5 billion.
But due to nearly 9 billion euros in capital appreciation, households'
securities still appreciated by 3 billion.

In contrast to the loss of purchasing power, Dutch companies' earnings
increased. Their total net profit grew by 7 billion euros to 60.8 billion.
The profit gain was used by the companies for higher payouts to
shareholders, higher investments and to strengthen their balance sheets.
