Time magazine kwam deze week met een special over Happiness. De
'keuze=vrijheid' en de 'directe democratie tegenover representatieve
democratie' discussies op deze lijst worden fraai gecombineerd in deze
paragraaf (even overgetypt voor de lijst):

" Democracy is a sure guide to happiness, though. It seems the more
opportunities people have to vote, the happier they are. Switzerland's
high ratings are due in part to the country's unique system of direct
democracy, in which citizens vote in several referenda a year, covering
everything from government spending to naturalization of foreigners.
According to Bruno Frey, a political economist at the University of
Zurich and co-author of Happiness and Economics, the Swiss tradition of
frequent plebiscites boosts people's life satisfaction. "People feel
they have self-determination and a say in the political process," Frey
argues, "and that's a big contributing factor to overall happiness."

En dan komt er een paragraaf die de 'keuze=vrijheid' visie van Henk
Vreekamp voor een specifieke situatie bevestigt, verwijzend naar de
terugval van het geluksgevoel vanwege de transitie van communisme naar
(wild) kapitalisme in de Sovjet Unie.
Maar ik blijf niet overtypen, dus daarvoor moet je even naar de
boekhandel...
