24.04.2003 200 000 Estonian ID Cards Issued
On April 23 at 14:20, 200 000th Estonian ID Card was issued to its
new holder.
The number of issued ID Cards has doubled in four months - 100 000th
card was issued on December 12, 2002.
50 000th card was issued to its holder on September 12, 2002.
"The number of issued ID cards matches the predictions made at
beginning of this year, considered too optimistic by many people,"
commented Mari Pedak, CEO of Estonian Citizenship and Migration
Board. "In 2003, our plan is to issue quarter a million ID cards. The
card is already being widely used as a daily identification document.
In the European Union, ID cards are also used as travel documents. It
is likely that it is soon also possible for Estonians to use the ID
card as a travel document. It is natural that at first, there is some
hesitation about the new digital environment. It takes some time to
get used to the new possibilities."
"The ID Card is finding its place as a natural part of electronic
communications," said Ain Järv, CEO of AS Sertifitseerimiskeskus.
"Using ID card and digital signature, all transactions where paper
documents are currently used can be made online. According to
Estonian legislation, public organizations must actively offer
electronic self-service options to citizens. It saves costs to both
sides. Already now, organizations can freely access the technology
and knowledge they need to stop moving around papers and bring online
any transaction in public or private sector. We hereby call all
companies and state agencies to actively do this to improve the
living quality of all of us."
AS Sertifitseerimiskeskus continues to develop and promote the
electronic features of ID card and digital signature. All the
information and technology is available to ID card users, enthusiasts
and developers at the website www.id.ee.
AS Sertifitseerimiskeskus (SK) was founded in 2001 by Hansapank,
Eesti Ãhispank, Eesti Telefon and EMT. The company's mission is to
create and develop infrastructure that facilitates secure and
reliable electronic business, record management and communications in
Estonia. To fulfil its mission, SK offers reliable certification and
time-stamping services and develops and distributes technology and
information necessary for using the Estonian ID card.
