Toespraak Bush

Beste Fritz,

Je vergeet een erg belangrijke passage uit de speech van Bush:

'Americans are asking:  How will we fight and win this war?   We will direct
every resource at our command -- every means of diplomacy, every tool of
intelligence, every instrument of law enforcement, every financial
influence, and every necessary weapon of war -- to the disruption and to the
defeat of the global terror network. '

Vooral 'and every necessary weapon of war' is angstaanjagend. Er wordt hier
na de toespraak al volop gespeculeerd over de mogelijkheid dat Bush en
consorten zelfs kernwapens kunnen gaan inzetten in Afghanistan. Bush zijn
adviseurs zouden die optie serieus overwegen. Veel andere militaire opties
om Al-Qaida te vernietigen zijn er namelijk niet in dit berglandschap.
Slechts de meer gematigde Colin Powell is daarvoor nog een sta in de weg,
wordt vernomen uit kringen rondom Bush.
Of bovenstaande waar is of niet, duidelijk is dat van Bush momenteel alles
te verwachten is. Zeker nu het congress zichzelf sinds de speech van
gisteravond definitief heeft uitgeschakeld.

De democratie ligt in coma. Amerika is overgeleverd aan de conservatieven in
dit land. Tom Ridge, republikeins gouverneur van Pennsylvania
(oorlogsveteraan en groot voorstander van de doodstraf), gaat het nieuwe
Homeland Security Office leiden. Waarom geen Democraat? Blijkbaar komt de
uiting van eenheid in dit land eenzijdig vanuit de volksvertegenwoordiging.
Bush heeft er geen boodschap aan en ziet zijn administratie liever nog
conservatiever worden.
