V I E N N A, Austria, June 2 — A protegée of right-wing Austrian leader
Joerg Haider has seen her world, and political dreams, blasted after her
husband was shot and killed while robbing a bank.
     Haider had pinned his hopes on Magda Jost-Bleckmann, 28, a member of
his Freedom Party and councilor in the government of Carinthia province,
where Haider is governor, to revive his and the party’s fortunes in the
October provincial elections.
     Jost-Bleckmann and her husband appeared to have it all. She was a
rising political star and expecting their first child in October, around the
same time as the election. He had two businesses and earned enough to
indulge his hobby, diving, while traveling around the world. They made their
home in the upscale Klagenfurt suburb.
     Now she is a widow, hiding out at her parents’ home in Germany, while
daily revelations from the police and media expose her husband’s double
life.
A Double Life
Alexander Jost, 38, spent a lot of time away from home. Police are now
reconstruct just where he was, and when. They suspect that he could have
been involved in up to 10 unsolved bank robberies since 1996, many in
neighboring Styria province.
     They were dubbed the “Pinocchio” robberies because of carnival masks
the robber wore, including one of the comical movie and TV character “Mr.
Bean.” The loot totaled at least $200,000.
     The end came in Linz on Tuesday. Police cornered a bank robber who
appeared to be armed with a gun. He threatened them and tried to take a bank
employee hostage. They shot him dead.
