Een interessant cahier over de golfcrisis die op 2 aug.1990, precies tien
jaar geleden uitbrak. Wat voor zin heeft het huidige beleid nog?

In 1998 besloot Amerika 97miljoen $ te besteden aan de oppositie tegen
Saddam. Ondertussen blokkeren de USA het herstel van de civiele economie van
Irak. Dit niet alleen met gevolgen voor de Iraakse bevolking maar ook voor
onder andere de Palestijnse en de Koerdische economie.

terwijl het gebrek aan voedsel onder het 'olie voor voedsel'-programma van
de VN de positie van Saddam lijkt te versterken doordat hij nog sterker dan
voorheen controle heeft over de noodzakelijke verdeling van levensmiddelen,
meldt HUMAN RIGHT WATCH in januari 2000:

Zo kun je natuurlijk nog wel even doorgaan. Het toestaan van grote
investeringen in de oliesector (angst van USA voor te hoge olieprijs in het
achterhoofd) lijkt een cynische maatregel. In feite is Milosevich een kleine
boef als je kijkt naar de bewuste acceptatie van bovengenoemde cijfers als
gevolg van het westerse (dus ook nederlandse) beleid. Mijn voorstel is om
het Amerikaanse beleid tav China ook toe te passen op Irak: mogelijk maken
van herstel van civiele economie van Irak, zodat mensen economisch minder
afhankelijk zijn van de overheid, en dus van de macht van Saddam, dan zal de
voedinigsbodem voor een effectieve oppositie ook groter zijn dan nu.
Bijkomend voordeel is dat we minder doden op ons geweten hebben dan nu.
