CONTROLLING CLIMATE CHANGE WITH UNICE IN 2000

A large UNICE delegation led by Mr Kohlhase has participated actively in several
meetings held in the framework of the 5th conference of contracting parties to
the United Nations Framework Conference on Climate Change (COP-5, 25 October to
5 November 1999 Bonn). Inter alia, UNICE met Mrs Wallström in this context. In
early 2000 UNICE is to organise a multi-stakeholder seminar in Brussels with a
view to discussing flexible instruments for climate change control (tentative
date: 11 January 2000).

UNICE AND MRS HASSI, PRESIDENT OF ENVIRONMENT COUNCIL: LET'S TALK ABOUT
SUSTAINABILITY

A UNICE delegation met Mrs Hassi in Helsinki on 5 November when it submitted its
memorandum entitled "UNICE agenda for sustainability" and took stock of
preparations for the Helsinki summit, the EU?s future strategy for integration
and the work of COP-5. Several UNICE delegates also took part in the
"Sustainability 21" conference held in Helsinki on 5 and 6 November 1999 and
organised inter alia by the Commission?s Green Consultative Forum. They spoke
to underline the importance of an EU strategy which integrates the economic,
societal and environmental factors in a balanced and dynamic way. This input is
reflected partly in the conclusions of the conference, attended by around two
hundred persons from a wide range of backgrounds.
