In Duitsland hebben honderden patiënten zich in mei 2011 gemeld met een EHEC-infectie. Een aantal patiënten is overleden. EHEC (ook enterohemorragische E. coli of STEC genoemd) is een darmbacterie die een besmettelijke dikkedarmontsteking kan veroorzaken met bloederige diarree. </p>

Het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezond en Milieu (RIVM) houdt de uitbraak van de EHEC-bacterie in de gaten en gaat zo nodig over tot bestrijding. Huisartsen en medisch specialisten zijn verplicht om ziektegevallen te melden bij de GGD.</p>
