Vergeleken met andere gemeenten in Noord- en Midden-Limburg heeft Venray in verhouding veruit de meeste deelnemers aan Burgernet. Per eind januari waren 3.634 inwoners van de gemeente Venray deelnemer aan Burgernet. Dat is 8,5 procent van het aantal inwoners en ruim boven het gemiddelde van 5 procent in het politiedistrict Limburg-Noord. Bij de start van Burgernet in december stond de teller in Venray op 7,8 procent. “Dat waren vooral de deelnemers aan sms-alert, de voorganger van Burgernet”, verklaart Hans Gilissen. “We hadden dus een goed vertrekpunt, maar we zijn daarna goed op koers gebleven.”</p>

Gilissen is voorzitter van de stuurgroep die verantwoordelijk is voor de invoering van Burgernet in de politieregio Limburg-Noord. In Burgernet werken burgers en politie samen om snel criminelen of mensen in nood op te sporen of om de bevolking te waarschuwen. Via (mobiele) telefoon en internet roept de meldkamer van de politie burgers in de omgeving van een incident op om uit te kijken naar een persoon. Ze krijgen daarbij een duidelijk signalement. Doel van Burgernet is om samen de eigen woonomgeving veiliger te maken.</p>

Venray was samen met Echt-Susteren de eerste gemeente in het politiedistrict Limburg-Noord waar Burgernet van start ging. Inmiddels zijn negen van de vijftien gemeenten in het district gevolgd. Eind van dit jaar loopt Burgernet in alle gemeenten. Doelstelling is dat 7,5% van de inwoners deelneemt aan het systeem. Dat doel is Venray dus al ruimschoots bereikt. Vandaar dat burgemeester Gilissen een nieuw doel formuleert: “We gaan voor de tien procent Burgernetdeelnemers in Venray”, zegt hij enthousiast.</p>
