Disobedience | Lectures by philosopher Femke Kaulingfreks and brain
researcher Alan Sanfey
Monday 19 October 2020 | 20.00 – 21.15 hrs | Online from LUX, Nijmegen
Radboud Reflects and Donders Institute
"I am done with corona," is a much-heard complaint lately. After six
months of social distancing, we would prefer to go back to normal, but
we are now experiencing a second wave of corona and obeying the corona
rules leads to more and more resistance. Why did we obey at the start of
the crisis and why is our behaviour, at this point in time, less easily
influenced by our government? What is the pandemic doing to our psyche
and inclination to obey? And to what extent has civil disobedience
mainly become a weapon to defend self-interest? Think along with brain
researcher Alan Sanfey and philosopher Femke Kaulingfreks about civil
(dis)obedience in these times of corona.

Leading in the dark
The global behavioural change we saw during the corona crisis is
unheard-of. From one day to the next we faced an unprecedented virus
with our government leading us in the dark. With only fifty percent of
the knowledge, it made one hundred percent of the decisions for us. What
does such a situation do to our duty to obey? Alan Sanfey shares what
behavioural and neuroscience tell us about obedience. The current
pandemic demonstrates the importance of long-term compliance to the
corona rules. However, changing the behaviour of an entire population is
a major challenge in which many popular strategies often backfire.
Counter-democracy
Against the background of the corona crisis, we are dealing with a
social development that is also referred to as counter-democracy:
citizens no longer go along with the government, but mainly stand up for
their own interests and disrespect authority. Citizens are no longer
disobedient to improve policy, but to weaken the government. Femke
Kaulingfreks explains how democracy has increasingly become a
battleground and why certain groups have lost their trust in the
government. To what extent does counter-democracy play a role in
contemporary protests? Does this explain why we are less and less
interested in corona policies? Or is there more to it?
After their lectures, Femke Kaulingfreks and Alan Sanfey will
participate in a discussion led by philosopher Frank van Caspel. Should
we beware that disobedient is becoming the norm? And what can we do
against that?
This program is in English.
