Siemens Energy claims ‘breakthrough’ in carbon capture trial

Siemens Energy <http://www.siemens.com/energy> says it has made a
‘breakthrough’ in the first test phase of its CO2 capture process at
E.ON<http://www.eon.com/>’s
Staudinger power plant near Hanau in Germany.

After 3000 hours of operation since the beginning of the trial in September
2009, Siemens says its PostCap post-combustion capture process successfully
captured over 90% of CO2 with nearly zero solvent emissions.

And, Siemens adds, the energy consumption of the PostCap process is
significantly lower than comparable conventional processes.

The PostCap process uses a non-volatile, aqueous amino acid salt solution as
the scrubbing agent, which eliminates the need for complex downstream
scrubbing of the flue gas after CO2 capture and removed additional
contaminants.

The stability and low losses from the scrubbing agent could also potentially
benefit operating costs.

“We’ve confirmed with the first operating results at our pilot facility that
our CO2 capture process is not only highly efficient but also meets the most
stringent requirements on environmental compatibility without additional
downstream scrubbing,” says Nicolas Vortmeyer, who heads Siemens’ carbon
capture efforts.

The Staudinger pilot project, which is sponsored by E.ON and the German
Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology <http://www.bmwi.de/> as part
of the COORETEC Initiative <http://www.cooretec.de/index.php?index=21>, will
continue to provide further operational data.

The information garnered from the project will be used as the basis for a
larger-scale demonstration project at Tampa Electric’s Big Bend coal-fired
plant in the US. This trial will be supported by the US Department of
Energy.
