It was yesterday that the Irish Aviation Authority warned that winds
were carrying volcanic ash from Iceland and that a no-fly zone may have
to be established for Dublin and Shannon airports - and airspace.

The IAA said that it did not expect any impact on flights passing
through Irish airspace to and from e.g. London's Heathrow airport.

Last night, at 20:30, an announcement said that all flights using
Dublin, Shannon, Galway, Knock, Donegal, Cork and Kerry would be
grounded until 13:00 local time. The IAA said "Ireland falls within the
predicted area of ash concentrations that exceed acceptable engine
manufacturer tolerance levels." It published a map which showed Ireland
(and only Ireland - not even much sea) covered in a red mark to show the
area of high risk.

However, although the IAA said that UK air traffic would not be
affected, that's not the view of NATS, the UK's Air Navigation Service.
They say "a no-fly zone is in place in the west of Scotland and Northern
Ireland, including some airports in the Western Isles from 0700 (local
time) until at least 1300 (local time)." NATS plans a further
announcement at 12:00 local time, 11:00 GMT
