het eens met het beleid om de Palestijnen uit Oost-Jerusalem te pesten.

NIJKERK – Stichting Christenen voor Israël (CvI) heeft zaterdag „met
verbijstering” gereageerd op de brief die de Protestantse Kerk in
Nederland (PKN) vorige week aan de Israëlische overheid stuurde.

Het moderamen van de generale synode van de Protestantse Kerk riep de
Israëlische regering donderdag op de rechten van Palestijnen meer te
respecteren en haar „restrictief beleid” te beëindigen. De kerk
reageerde daarmee op het zogenoemde Kairos­document, dat in december
verscheen. Het advies om de bezettingspolitiek van Israël te bestempelen
als zonde en het land economisch te boycotten, wees ze toen af.

Volgens Christenen voor Israël vervalt het moderamen in een „eeuwenoude
zonde om op arrogante wijze het Joodse volk de les te lezen.” De
„onopgeefbare verbondenheid met het volk Israël”, een zinsnede uit de
kerkorde en uit de brief, verwordt volgens de stichting zo tot een
„krachteloos cliché.”

CvI spreekt namens haar achterban en een aanzienlijk deel uit de
Protestantse Kerk, zo stelt ze. „Velen zijn door dit optreden met
schaamte vervuld jegens Israël, jegens de Joodse gemeenschap in ons land
en jegens het hoofd van de kerk, Jezus Christus, de Koning der Joden.”

De kerk laat zich op allerlei manieren spannen voor het karretje van de
anti-Israëllobby, aldus Christenen voor Israël. Ze constateert dat de
Protestantse Kerk zich laat misleiden door valse propaganda. Zo zou de
kerk over het beleid van Israël betreffende het renoveren en bouwen van
woningen door Palestijnse burgers in Oost-Jeruzalem anders moeten
spreken. Ook heeft de kerk volgens CvI geen inzicht in het
internationale recht.

De organisatie verwijt de Protestantse Kerk ook dat ze niet inziet dat
vijanden van Israël de laatste bastions van steun aan Israël (Amerika en
Europa) willen slechten. „Kerken zijn daarbij een belangrijk doelwit.”

Volgens CvI heeft de kerk de opdracht om liefde te tonen aan Israël en
een dam op te werpen tegen de „demonisering van Israël.” De kerk dient
zich in haar spreken over Israël niet te funderen op de democratie maar
op de „eeuwige beloften van God.”

Felle reacties uit PKN op Kairos-document

HUIZEN – Een twaalftal voormannen uit de orthodoxe vleugel van de
Protestantse Kerk in Nederland (PKN) uit in een open brief onder de
titel ”Het uur van de misleiding” felle kritiek op het Kairos-document
van Palestijnse theologen.

Dinsdag bieden Palestijnse christelijke theologen in de Domkerk in
Utrecht aan kerkleiders een document aan waarin zij christenen
wereldwijd oproepen de „bezettingspolitiek” van Israël als zonde te
bestempelen en een economische boycot tegen dit land in te stellen. Het
document, getiteld ”Uur van de waarheid: Een woord van geloof, hoop en
liefde uit het hart van het Palestijnse lijden”, wordt aangeboden onder
verantwoordelijkheid van ICCO, Pax Christ/IKV, Vrienden van Sabeel,
Keerpunt en Kerk in Actie.

De ondertekenaars van de Open Brief die vrijdag werd gepubliceerd,
schrijven zich gedrongen te voelen om reeds voor de presentatie van het
Kairos-document te reageren. Voormannen uit de breedte van de orthodoxie
in de PKN hebben de brief ondertekend. Onder hen zijn enkele leden van
het hoofdbestuur van de Gereformeerde Bond, de voorzitter van de
Confessionele Vereniging in de PKN, een lid van het hoofdbestuur van het
Confessioneel Gereformeerd Beraad, de directeur van het Evangelisch
Werkverband, een lid van de Protestantse Raad voor Kerk en Israël en
diverse leden van de werkgroep Israël van het Evangelisch Werkverband.

Volgens dr. ir. J. van der Graaf, oud-algemeen-secretaris van de
Gereformeerde Bond en een van de initiatiefnemers van de brief, denken
de ondertekenaars na over een breder verweerschrift tegen het
Kairos-document.

This document is the Christian Palestinians’ word to the world about
what is happening in Palestine. It is written at this time when we
wanted to see the Glory of the grace of God in this land and in the
sufferings of its people. In this spirit the document requests the
international community to stand by the Palestinian people who have
faced oppression, displacement, suffering and clear apartheid for more
than six decades. The suffering continues while the international
community silently looks on at the occupying State, Israel. Our word is
a cry of hope, with love, prayer and faith in God. We address it first
of all to ourselves and then to all the churches and Christians in the
world, asking them to stand against injustice and apartheid, urging them
to work for a just peace in our region, calling on them to revisit
theologies that justify crimes perpetrated against our people and the
dispossession of the land.
In this historic document, we Palestinian Christians declare that the
military occupation of our land is a sin against God and humanity, and
that any theology that legitimizes the occupation is far from Christian
teachings because true Christian theology is a theology of love and
solidarity with the oppressed, a call to justice and equality among peoples.
This document did not come about spontaneously, and it is not the result
of a coincidence. It is not a theoretical theological study or a policy
paper, but is rather a document of faith and work. Its importance stems
from the sincere expression of the concerns of the people and their view
of this moment in history we are living through. It seeks to be
prophetic in addressing things as they are without equivocation and with
boldness, in addition it puts forward ending the Israeli occupation of
Palestinian land and all forms of discrimination as the solution that
will lead to a just and lasting peace with the establishment of an
independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds as its capital. The
document also demands that all peoples, political leaders and
decision-makers put pressure on Israel and take legal measures in order
to oblige its government to put an end to its oppression and disregard
for the international law. The document also holds a clear position that
non-violent resistance to this injustice is a right and duty for all
Palestinians including Christians.
The initiators of this document have been working on it for more than a
year, in prayer and discussion, guided by their faith in God and their
love for their people, accepting advice from many friends: Palestinians,
Arabs and those from the wider international community. We are grateful
to our friends for their solidarity with us.
As Palestinian Christians we hope that this document will provide the
turning point to focus the efforts of all peace-loving peoples in the
world, especially our Christian sisters and brothers. We hope also that
it will be welcomed positively and will receive strong support, as was
the South Africa Kairos document launched in 1985, which, at that time
proved to be a tool in the struggle against oppression and occupation.
We believe that liberation from occupation is in the interest of all
peoples in the region because the problem is not just a political one,
but one in which human beings are destroyed.
We pray God to inspire us all, particularly our leaders and
policy-makers, to find the way of justice and equality, and to realize
that it is the only way that leads to the genuine peace we are seeking.
