The man who led the "No" campaign when the Irish Republic rejected the
EU's Lisbon Treaty is rejoining battle for the approaching second
referendum.

Millionaire businessman Declan Ganley originally said he would take a back
seat for the vote on 2 October.

But he said he had decided to rejoin because of "fallacies" being spread
about the Lisbon Treaty.

Polls suggest most Irish voters will back the treaty second time round,
after it was rejected in June 2008.

All EU member states must ratify the treaty for it to come into force.

Nearly all have done so, and the Irish referendum remains the biggest
obstacle to its progress.

The treaty is aimed at streamlining EU institutions, to improve
decision-making in the enlarged 27-member bloc. Opponents say it
undermines national sovereignty and concentrates too much power in
Brussels.

Announcing his return to the campaign at the weekend, Mr Ganley told the
Irish Daily Mail: "I hadn't intended to come back into the debate, but I
soon realised that I couldn't remain silent and do nothing when I knew in
my heart that the so-called 'facts' being spun about the Lisbon Treaty are
plain wrong."

Mr Ganley, founder of the Libertas party, campaigned for election to the
European Parliament in June, but failed to gain enough votes.
