Zealand – that have experienced the first winter transmission of the
pandemic virus– it is known that most individuals experience
influenza-like symptoms comparable to the seasonal influenza but a
significant number of individuals (about 30 cases per million
inhabitants) have developed severe disease in need of intensive care and
in spite of excellent medical care some deaths have occurred. As of 12
October 2009, in total 185 individuals have died in Australia, (about
nine per million inhabitants)

Most countries in Europe have experienced transmission of the disease
and 16 out of 30 EU and EEA countries have experienced deaths, with
United Kingdom and Spain mostly affected. There is so far very little
genetic and antigenic drift in circulating strains compared to the
viruses first isolated, therefore the vaccines are expected to be
effective.
Hence the vaccine strategy is to protect the vulnerable. Offering
vaccine to selected risk groups will provide them with individual
protection. For individuals in risk groups that are unable to take
vaccine (children < 6 months) or respond poorly to vaccines (individuals
with immunosuppressive treatment), it is important that household
members and healthcare workers consider to be vaccinated to provide
optimal protection to the people they are caring for. In addition, they
will be protected themselves.

Commentaar:
Er zullen nog wildere getallen komen v.w.b. dodelijke slachtoffers van
A(H1N1): in Australie (daar is de hele zaak al voorbij) zijn 9 per
miljoen gestorven.

Een vergelijkbaar totaal voor Nederland wordt dan 150 doden.
Tot nog toe betreft dat overigens voor het overgrote deel mensen die al
een ernstige ziekte hebben.
