US, EU block Brazilian attempt to slash biofuel tariffs at WTO

GENEVA: The United States and European Union are blocking a Brazilian
attempt to include biofuels among the "environmental goods" whose tariffs
would be significantly reduced or eliminated as part of a new global
commerce pact, trade officials said Monday.

Brazil, which would reap billions of dollars in revenue from widespread
ethanol liberalization, made the proposal at the World Trade Organization
last week, said officials who were present at the closed-door meeting.

Het wordt dus helaas weer duidelijk dat het de EU en VS bij alle
discussies over ethanol en biodiesel niet om energiezekerheid gaat, maar
om een nieuw excuus om landbouwsubsidies in stand te houden.
