Dutch leader nixed summit of six EU founders

BERLIN - A German bid to call an emergency summit of the six European
Union founder states this week after voters in France and the Netherlands
rejected the EU constitution was torpedoed by Dutch prime minister Jan
Peter Balkenende, an official confirmed on Friday.

Five of the states which founded the EU - Germany, France, Italy, Belgium
and Luxembourg - had wanted to hold the meeting, but Chancellor Gerhard
Schroeder's chief spokesman, Bela Anda, said Balkenende had turned down
the idea.

"One can only comment on this decision with understanding," Anda said.

The EU constitution was rejected in a French referendum last Sunday and in
a Dutch vote on Wednesday.
