Europe: 75% in Britain would say no
-----------------------------------
By Joe Murphy Political Editor, Evening Standard

An overwhelming three in four Britons would vote against the EU constitution
if Britain holds a referendum, a poll revealed today.

The huge level of public opposition emerged as business leaders staged
their own rebellion against the crisis-hit treaty. Eight senior
businessmen spelled out their doubts in a letter to the Financial Times,
in which they accused a "political elite" of refusing to accept the
people's verdicts in France and the Netherlands.

"There must be no attempt to ask either country to vote again," said the
eight, who include Simon Wolfson, chief executive of Next, and Stuart
Rose, boss of Marks & Spencer. "Nor should any elements of the constitution
be ratified by the back door. Indeed, the Government should commit to hold
a referendum in the UK before implementing any substantial part of the
constitution."

The warning came as Foreign Secretary Jack Straw prepares to tell MPs on
Monday that a Bill paving the way for a UK referendum will be shelved
until after the EU leaders make up their minds what to do next. The
Government is desperate for the treaty to be declared dead but is not yet
willing to say so publicly.

President Chirac of France and German chancellor Gerhard Schroder are
still insisting that every country should go through the motions of a
referendum.

The inevitability of a humiliating defeat in Britain was made clear by
today's Mori survey in The Sun. It said 72 per cent who had a view would
vote no, while 28 per cent would vote yes.
