"EP committee votes to keep country of origin principle

In Short:

The EP's Industry Committee has gone against the socialist rapporteur
Evelyne Gebhardt's attempt to water down the services directive.
Brief News:

The European Parliament's Industry Committee on 26 April rejected
Socialist rapporteur Evelyne Gebhardt's proposal to remove the country of
origin principle from the services directive.

MEP John Purvis (EPP-ED, UK), said: "I'm very pleased that we obtained
majority support for the essential direction of this proposal. While
inserting certain acceptable safeguards, this gives a signal that the
Parliament wants the freedom for service providers to range across
internal EU borders."

Meanwhile at a joint meeting to bolster the 'yes' vote on the EU
Constitution in France, President Chirac and Chancellor Schröder pretended
to ignore the ongoing legislative process and announced that they would
soon present an initiative that would ensure that service providers
respected the minimum requirements in the country where the service is
delivered."
